Fingal: Modular Surfaces Inspired by the Force of the Sea

Unifying Design and Nature

Inspired by the force of the sea, Fingal is a design that emphasizes balance and masterwork, capturing the essence of natural patterns. Created by Panayiotis Stelikos, this collection of modular surfaces brings the beauty of a rocky scenery into interior spaces, allowing people to reconnect with nature.

Representing the core meaning of integrated design, Fingal stands out with its original pattern applied on modular surfaces. By extruding the furniture form from details of the pattern, a unification of surfaces and materials is achieved. The furniture pieces and bookcase, along with the carefully chosen color tones and high-quality materials, create a bewildering impression of a rocky landscape in the interior.

What sets Fingal apart is its ability to preserve functionality and comfort while exposing guests to the soothing effect of aesthetically considered design. The modular surfaces can be applied in various interior spaces, allowing for limitless creativity and different variations of the pattern on the surfaces. The design not only adds visual appeal but also enhances the functionality of the space.

The wall cladding of Fingal is made of painted wood cut with laser precision, while the bookcase is created from metal sheet. The modular carpet, with its printed and patterned carpet tiles, can be placed independently, adding versatility to the design. The mobile furniture, such as ottomans, are upholstered with fabric digitally printed with the proposed pattern design. Metal sheet is also used on the legs of the sitting furniture, completing the clean-cut pattern that unifies all the spatial elements.

With its meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, Fingal represents a creative and technical challenge overcome by the design team. The project required inventive solutions to ensure the design's fulfillment. The result is a harmonious blend of nature-inspired patterns and functional design elements.

The Fingal project started in December 2019 and was completed in February 2020. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research on natural patterns found in seaside landscapes, specifically focusing on the transforming impact of sea water. This research, combined with on-site visits and in-depth study of relevant publications, allowed the team to create a catalogue of discovered natural patterns that served as the foundation for the design.

Fingal's unique approach to modular surfaces has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Fingal's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to those who experience it.

Fingal is not just a design; it is a testament to the power of integrating nature and design in a human-made environment. With its ability to transform spaces and create a soothing ambiance, Fingal invites us to reconnect with nature and appreciate the beauty of well-considered design.
